We are far more conscious of our food choices
today, then we were even a
few years ago. We care about where our food comes from and how it is grown.
Organic food addresses many of our concerns. It’s free of chemicals and
pesticides, it reduces environmental impact, it factors in animal welfare,
and more. Clearly then, organic seems like the way to go. The one thing that often
crops up as a barrier for most people is the cost factor.
Does that mean you let go of the organic option? Absolutely not! The benefits of eating organic food are far too many to list down here.
All it needs is a bit of planning on your part, and the world of organic will soon be within your reach.
Here are some smart hacks you could employ:
Buy in bulk
Buying in bulk works out to be more cost-effective in the long run. This is especially true of dried foods and vegetables like carrots, potatoes and onions, which have a long shelf life. You could also opt for larger cuts of meat and freeze the portions to be used later.
Make the most of sales, deals and special offers
Keep an eye out for discounted sales or the “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” kind of offers. You could look to become part of an online organic community or sign up for a newsletter to be notified of such sales.
Embrace the frozen
Frozen foods have a long shelf life. You can always opt for frozen organic veggies and fruits. Most frozen foods are picked at the peak of harvest and frozen right away – preserving both their nutritional value and their flavours over long periods of time.
In-season is sensible
Another smart move would be to buy organic produce when they are in season. They’ll be fresh, more nutritious and a whole lot cheaper than when they’re out of season.
Start with baby steps
You don’t have to overhaul your dietary habits overnight. Start small! Introduce one item at a time. Gauge your comfort level. Then, once it’s fully integrated into your diet, add another item. Like with any journey, the important thing is to get started.
Good luck, then! Meet you on the healthier side.
